Abstract

Population aging is a global trend, but its timing and impact differ by region of the world. Having taken place first in Europe and then in North America and Oceania, this demographic shift has just in recent years occurred in Asia, but progressing at a much faster pace. For this century, hence, Asia has become the center of population aging as it is deemed to face greater challenges posited by this demographic shift. This session focuses on challenges associated with medicine, health, and welfare in a rapidly aging Asia. Representative challenges include an urgency to shift medical focus from acute to chronic diseases, projected shortages in medical and healthcare professionals, and anticipated insolvencies of public healthcare expenditures, among others. Not only does this session shares the latest knowledge on these challenges, it also discusses how these challenges may be addressed, in some selected national contexts, with strategies that are informed by multidisciplinary perspectives including health sciences, public health, social policy, and design. This whole session aims to contribute to addressing the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), the goal “to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages,” in the case of rapidly aging Asia today and in coming decades.
